“Americans Who Tell the Truth” Exhibit of 38 portraits opens in Ipswich, MA

A community engagement project highlighting models of courageous citizenship

[Ipswich, MA, October 1-31, 2020]

Americans Who Tell the Truth, a collection of portraits painted by nationally acclaimed cultural and educational artist Robert Shetterly, will be on public display throughout the town of Ipswich during the month of October. The portraits and accompanying narratives in the “Americans Who Tell the Truth” series highlight citizens who courageously address issues of social, cultural and economic fairness. Combining art and other media, the series “offers resources to inspire a new generation of engaged Americans who will act for the common good, our communities, and the earth.” The exhibit aims to encourage community involvement and discourse around what it means and what it takes to be an engaged and ethical citizen. What is our role and responsibility to uphold our democracy? The 2020 exhibit will focus on the themes of racial justice, women’s suffrage, government accountability, and accessible healthcare.

The print reproductions of the original portraits will be displayed at Zumis Espresso, 40 Market Street, and all four locations of the Ipswich Public Schools. Each school has chosen four portraits to display and to use for curriculum building. Although schools will not be open for public viewing, the IPS collection will be duplicated at the Zumis venue to bridge the school and community exhibits. Zumis will be open during regular business hours and viewing is welcomed with adherence to proper social distancing.
